Fitting Right In

It has been a week since Abbey has been home with us, and she is fitting right in! She is such a good girl! She loves to cuddle, and she is so social with all the people who come to see her. She has already met almost all her family, even her uncle Quincy (quite the fun night!) She loves all her toys and is already being spoiled by grandparents! She sleeps really well in her crate and is doing very well with potty training. She was itching and scratching all the time and I could see that her skin was dry and flaky, so I called the vet and they said it was a normal thing for growing puppies to have dry skin. They recommended this dietary supplement (which we got) and giving her an oatmeal bath. She doesn't mind the supplement but the bath was not such a success. We bathed her in the laundry room sink and I think the deep basin made her nervous. After the bath she was so fluffy and exhausted! She cuddled on our lap forever, it was so sweet! She is the cutest puppy on earth (in my unbiased opinion). I love her more and more every day and couldn't imagine our family without her!

Feel free to leave comments on the blog, I sometimes feel like I update it but no one reads it, so if you do like reading about her, let me know!

The first 48 hours

We have had Abbey now just over 48 hours and it has been such a blast! She is such a good puppy! The first night was so smooth, we took her out ever 2-3 hours, she peed and went right back in her crate. Last night was a little harder, I think the stress of being adopted, and the new food got to her tummy a little bit so we had to take her out about every 1-2 hours and she was crying a little more. Luckily Jeremy volunteered to take the two middle shifts (which were the coldest) what a great daddy!

Today, we had so much fun! We went to Auntie 'Reen's house to have some pictures taken (which will be posted as soon as I get them) and then we went to my parent's house for an anniversary dinner. Abbey had so much fun playing with their yellow lab Quincy, it was hilarious! Needless to say, after such a big day, she is completely zonked.

One of her best qualities is how cuddly she is. She loves to sleep on your lap and be held. We are taking advantage of it because we know she won't be this little very long!

Abbey's Home!

Last night at 6:00 Jeremy and I finally got to bring Abbey home! The car ride was so smooth, she fell asleep with her head on my shoulder! When we got home, we took her outside and she went potty right away! She's a true genius! :)

We had some visitors, and we played and played, and then she crashed in Jeremy's lap! She is so cute!

We put her in her crate and she cried for only about 2 minutes, then she went to sleep. We took her out about 3 times last night, she went potty and went straight to bed! What a good girl! We have only had 2 inside accidents so far, not bad for 7 weeks old :)

Here are some pictures of that last 12 hours:

Death by Jursualem Cricket

After working 6 night shifts in a row, I have a really hard time getting back on a regular day schedule. Generally, when I am wide awake in the middle of the night, I will go watch a movie or read a book, so as to not disturb Jeremy with my tossing and turning. Last night was no different. Jeremy and I went to bed around 11, and by 1:30, I was bored to death and keeping Jeremy up; so off to the den I went to watch Legends of the Fall.
As Rieber and I are cuddled up on the sofa enjoying Brad Pitt, out of the corner of my eye I see this ginormous bug crawling straight toward us! Rieber is fast asleep and completely useless so I had to think fast! I had a half empty cup of juice and an empty cereal bowl within arm's reach. I quickly poured the juice into the bowl and trapped the nasty thing under the cup. Now Rieber, who is finally awake and trying to be helpful, knocks the cup over in an attempt to eat the creature. I push him away and trap him again.

"Think! Think!! What am I going to do with this thing? What the hell is this thing? Is it going to kill me? Are there 100 more waiting to come in and eat me???" I was on the verge of panic!

Well I couldn't leave it under the cup, so I went and got a zip-lock bag and somehow maneuvered it into the bag and sealed it up. Even though it was 3 in the morning, I had to wake Jer up for his help. What good is a husband if he can't save you from man eating bugs? Plus, I had done all the hard work already, the thing was safely contained in a zip-lock bag on the kitchen counter.

"Jer, I am so sorry, but there is a really big scary bug and I don't know what to do with it."

What a gracious husband I have, he climbs out of bed and comes in the kitchen to investigate. He has no idea what it is, but agrees it is one ugly guy.

We decided (well, I decided) to put the zip-lock bag in a Tupperware container, just in case the thing could eat through plastic. Jer began searching online to figure out what it was.

Google search: "Big striped butt, 6 legs"

Here's what we got:

A Jerusalem Cricket!

"Ok, cricket is not so scary." (But you have to admit that is the ugliest cricket on earth!)

So after reading about the harmless being, I decided it was safe to finish my movie; but not safe to let him go, in case he decided to come back inside. So I left him in the bag in the container to die overnight.

Well this morning, much to my amazement, the thing was still alive!! I had to reward the endurance and survival of the harmless cricket, so I let him go this morning in the yard. (A very safe distance from the house.)

When he crawled out of the bag, he turned around and walked right back toward me. Probably a way to say "Thanks!"

Oh the adventures of insomnia....
